After accomplishing everything to which she thought she could aspire by the age of 50, Karin Glass, who once owned one of the largest women’s sports-marketing companies in the world, turned her interests to more domestic pursuits. She signed up for flower-arranging lessons, cooking classes, and sommelier courses. After she was invited to start a restaurant in a local gallery, Karin became enamored with the idea of having a tearoom. She eventually opened Serenity by Occasions Divine in a house built in 1868, one of the earliest in Zionsville.
“The tearoom serves as a launch for teaching etiquette,” Karin explains. “I love all the different things tea stands for—enjoying a conversation and not a text, enjoying the moment—and really that’s what we need to get back to.” Open from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday, Serenity serves English Tea from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
The majority of the recipes Karin uses at the tearoom come from McCall’s, an American monthly women’s publication particularly popular in the 1960s. Frequenters of Serenity have two options for teatime. The Princess tea, at $15 plus tax and gratuity per adult, offers two sandwiches, a choice of scone, four tea treats, and tea. For those who wish to enjoy a more hearty afternoon tea, the Duchess, at $20 plus tax and gratuity, includes a salad, two different teas, three sandwiches, a choice of scone, and five sweet treats.
Among the many teas on Serenity’s menu, Glass Slipper, a caffeine-free rooibos blend with a strong almond flavor, is a customer favorite. According to Karin, it is so popular that she has a subscription service through which people can get it each month for $10.
