Cheryl Domi, the owner of the Sassafras Tea Room, considers her role a part of “God’s great sense of humor.” With a background in interior design, owning a tearoom was not a part of her original life plan. She was hired initially just to manage Sassafras but was then offered the opportunity to own and open the business, which has successfully served tea and treats since 2010.
The tearoom resides in a 19th-century home in Greenwood, Indiana, just south of Indianapolis. When guests arrive, they often say the feeling there is akin to a visit to grandma’s house. “[Sassafras] is like going to an oasis, a retreat to get away from the hustle and bustle,” Cheryl says. “It’s a place where you can rejuvenate and refresh with friends.”
Afternoon tea is served by reservation promptly at 2:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Guests can choose to enjoy the Duchess Tea for $21 per person, which includes three teas, scones, three sandwiches, and a tower of treats. A petite version of its traditional service, the Princess Tea is $15 per guest. While Cheryl tries to keep the menu fairly simple, she incorporates as many fresh and local ingredients as possible for optium flavor and includes healthier options.
“Whether you come in for lunch or tea, a birthday party, a small wedding, or some other special event, you’re drinking out of a china cup and saucer,” Cheryl comments. “It makes guests feel special.” Patrons are sure to enjoy one of the many teas specially blended for Sassafras, which, along with an assortment of tea-oriented items and crafts from local artisans, are also available for purchase at the gift shop.
