What could be more relaxing after a day of shopping than enjoying some delightful treats and perhaps a pot of tea? Tucked away on the third floor of Saks Fifth Avenue at the Fashion Mall at Keystone Crossing, Tilly’s Tea Room provides a lively ambiance for reviving the tradition of having afternoon tea in a department store. Owner Sharon Moore, originally from England, recalls fond memories of going to Harrod’s, a luxury department store in London, and enjoying tea. After launching a first location in 2015, she was offered the opportunity a year later to move her tearoom into Saks.
“We’re trying to bring back some of the nostalgia associated with the department store tearoom,” Sharon says. “We’re not a traditional, old-fashioned tearoom.”
While the decor may be more modern than those of other tea venues, Tilly’s menu reflects the traditional fare one would expect with a British afternoon tea. For $29 per person, afternoon tea at Tilly’s features six different tea sandwiches (including chicken salad and cucumber with cream cheese), an English scone with homemade Devonshire clotted cream, an array of miniature seasonal desserts, and a pot of tea of the guest’s choice.
“For our teas, we always make sure to have the staples—a good English Breakfast and an Earl Grey,” Sharon explains. “And yes, they are typically served the traditional British way with milk.” In addition to these selections, Tilly’s offers a number of blends and varieties to fit all types of flavor preferences.
Children ages 12 and under can enjoy the Princess Tea for $14 per person, which features a smaller menu and more whimsical fare. While afternoon tea is served all day, the tea room also offers a full lunch menu for those looking for a more substantial meal.
Tilly’s Tea Room at Saks Fifth Avenue is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Reservations are not required, but are encouraged.
