Patrick Brewster opened Silver Dove Afternoon Tea with business partner Lee Morgan earlier this year on busy Tremont Street, just around the corner from the Old State House, because of his wife’s longtime passion for the tea ritual and all things British. “My wife’s a hardcore Anglophile,” says Patrick. “When we were dating, we’d go to hotel afternoon teas.”

If you have traveled the English countryside, you will immediately appreciate the tall golden-brown scones filled with currants that are easy to open yet sturdy enough to accommodate lashings of real clotted cream and strawberry preserves. Best of all, they are served warm from the oven.

The tea meal continues with savories such as an openfaced Coronation Chicken sandwich, cucumber sandwiches, and pork rillettes. Vegetarian options are also available. Four beautiful—and generous—sweet offerings round out the teatime experience, including Matcha Layer Cake, macarons, Italian Rainbow Cake, and pâte à choux. Everything on the menu is entirely gluten-free.

Patrick and Lee combine their bartending experience with their love of tea by featuring a lineup of classic cocktails that fit the classy afternoon-out tradition. “Besides 21 teas, we offer a Pimm’s cup or a gin and tonic, which naturally fits our British vibe,” states Patrick.

Silver Dove Afternoon Tea serves afternoon tea from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday by reservation.
