Set in a pleasant sidewalk-lined row of shops in La Mesa, The AubreyRose Tea Room—named for a dear friend and a love of gardening—is an enjoyable place for tea. “My mother always served afternoon tea,” owner Lorna Wyatt remembers. Later, Lorna wanted to recreate her love of teatime for ladies to experience the civility and joy of afternoon tea. Eventually she and her husband, David, had an opportunity to lease space that formerly housed an antiques shop.

The cuisine features such delights as chicken salad with cranberries, egg salad, seasonal fruit, and lavender-raspberry bread pudding served on a three-tiered tray graced with miniature roses and flowers from Lorna’s garden. Gluten-free versions are available, although customers should call for reservations and pricing. The hot-tea menu features a number of varieties, such as The AubreyRose house blend (a China Black tea with peach, mango, apple, orange, and guava flavors) and the Blue Mountain Sunrise (an Earl Grey variation).

Guests sometimes travel hours to visit this popular tearoom, and some regulars come every Saturday or even twice a week. Reservations are appreciated at AubreyRose, open four days a week (five during December). The large space seats up to 70, and prices range from $11.95 to $28.95 per person. “The tearoom is like having friends and family over for tea in our home . . . . We feel very privileged and honored,” says Lorna.
