Downton Abbey: The Grand Finalé arrives in theaters September 12, and we are looking forward to returning to the elegance of the Crawley family’s world once more for this special farewell. In this collection of articles, we invite you to celebrate the film’s release by hosting your own Downton-inspired afternoon tea. The two tea menus featured here will transport your guests to Downton through classic British fare and a touch of aristocratic flair. We’re also sharing a behind-the-scenes look at Highclere Castle—the real-life Downton Abbey where the TV show and movies have been filmed—as we chat with Lady Fiona, the Countess of Carnarvon, who lives at the iconic estate.
1. Teatime Downton Abbey Style
This Downton Abbey tea was inspired by season one, episode two, of the PBS television series, where we first see the Dowager Countess of Grantham make tea. In this memorable scene, she used a Royal Crown Derby Imari tea set like this and a silver tipping kettle. Our menu combines classic British favorites, such as Cucumber Tea Sandwiches and Victoria Sponge Cake, with more modern twists, such as Chocolate Biscuit Cake.
2. Afternoon Tea and a Movie
Friends will thoroughly enjoy a cozy, refined teatime gathering in the library before watching the new Downton Abbey film. This menu features Sultana-Buttermilk Scones, Watercress and Egg Salad Tea Sandwiches, Chocolate Mousse Cake, and more.
3. A Visit to the Real Downton Abbey

George Herbert, the 8th Earl of Carnarvon, and his wife, Lady Fiona, the Countess of Carnarvon, reside at Highclere Castle—the filming location of Downton Abbey. In this interview, Lady Carnarvon shares insights into their life at the historic estate, the influence of Downton Abbey, and her favorite spots to enjoy tea.
4. Spilling the Tea with Lady Carnarvon

Join Lady Carnarvon as she tells us more about her world at Highclere Castle and shares stories of her family’s ancestors, who have called the estate home throughout history. From hosting royal guests to sharing her tea ritual—English Breakfast or Lapsang Souchong at 4 p.m. daily—it’s a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at life in the real Downton Abbey.
